Complete each step in order to regain access to your computer and Microsoft 365 account. Have your phone and the temporary password from your text message ready before you begin.
Step-by-step instructions
1
Open the Windows security screen
If you are at your physical workstation, press Ctrl + Alt + Del.
If you are in a Remote Desktop or Terminal Server session, press Ctrl + Alt + End instead.
Both shortcuts open the same Windows security screen — the key combination depends on how you are connected.
2
Change your password
Select Change a password from the security screen. Enter the temporary password that was sent to you by text message, then enter your new password twice to confirm.
Your new password must be at least 8 characters — longer is better. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not reuse a previous password.
3
Sign in to Microsoft 365
Open a browser and go to login.microsoft.com. Sign in with your email address and your new password.
If Microsoft 365 apps were already open, you may be prompted to sign in again automatically — use your new password there as well.
Password changes can take a few minutes to sync. If your new password is not accepted right away, wait 2–3 minutes and try again.
4
Re-enroll the Microsoft Authenticator app
After signing in, you will see a screen that says "Let's keep your account secure." This is expected — your verification method has been reset and needs to be set up again.
Tap or click Next and follow the on-screen prompts to set up Microsoft Authenticator on your phone.
Have your phone ready
Don't have the app yet? Download Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) before tapping Next.
You're all set
Once Authenticator is configured and you can access your Microsoft 365 applications normally, you have completed the process. No further action is needed.
Need help?
If you get stuck at any step, submit a support ticket or call the IT helpdesk. Do not ask a coworker to enter your password on your behalf.
